The Lansing School Board has moved to hire Mrs. Yvonne Caamal Canul as interim superintendent for the Lansing School District. Mrs. Caamal Canul comes to the position of interim superintendent with a wealth of experience in the area of curriculum and academics. She's managed multimillion dollar budgets at the Michigan Department of Education and has been a long time member of the capital region. Mrs. Caamal Canul is a former administrator in the Lansing School District, serving as Director of Bilingual and Migrant Education, Principal of CLCCA and Director of Curriculum.

The most important quality for future board members is the courage to make difficult decisions. Those will include closing and realigning school buildings - decisions that by their nature will be unpopular with some district residents. They also must show that they will put the district's students first. And yes, that means students come ahead of employees. It's vital that new board members stand on their own two feet and don't succumb to the pressures of the existing board's cliques and agendas. Let the race begin.

Nine candidates have filed paperwork to run for three open seats on the Lansing Board of Education. Only one of them is an incumbent, Nicole Armbruster, who was appointed earlier this year to fill the seat vacated by Hugh Clarke Jr. Board members Jack Davis and Ken Jones will not see reelection.
